Rémi
In Quebec, 1 child out of 100 is born with a heart malformation requiring medical follow-up. Half of them will undergo significant operations and follow-ups throughout their lives. Let's take the case of Rémi, born in April 2014. During his first year of life, it was discovered that he had a heart murmur, but the situation was not concerning and would likely resolve over time.
Later, during a follow-up appointment, the heart murmur had disappeared, but it was revealed that Rémi suffered from a fairly advanced subaortic stenosis, and surgery was required. Rémi underwent his operation in November 2016 at the Montreal Children's Hospital. The operation went well, but at the first post-surgery follow-up appointment, it was found that his condition persisted, and at least one more surgery would be necessary.
On January 4, 2022, Rémi underwent his second open-heart surgery. Despite some complications, Rémi is doing well and is eager to resume activities such as skiing, biking, scootering, or skateboarding!
"Rémi, our great superhero, is back home after his second open-heart surgery. All of this is possible due to world-renowned medicine and the quality of care he has had access to here in Montreal, but also thanks to the Heart Foundation, which accompanied and supported us in difficult times. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Once again, Rémi, your strength of character and resilience have shown us that you are a warrior. It hasn't always been easy, there has been turbulence, but you have faced each step with courage. Bravo, champion!"
